Room To Live II

Early in the course we watched a video on using our seatbelts. This is a topic/subject that has had a tremendous effect on me personally!! In fact, my personal experience about using the seatbelt as a passenger has saved my life!!

The presenter in the video had a lot of stories about using the seatbelt when driving. In one of his comments he told his wife to tell her friend to "Get the Hell out of the Car" if she is not going to wear her seat belt.

How would your family or friends react to this comment if they were not wearing a seat belt?

How have your experiences as a passneger & a student driver effected your using a seatbelt?

Have you ever been involved in a collision? What type of collision was it? (Head on, Side swipe, rear end, etc) Were there any injuries? Were you injured?

Which one of the seatbelt stories could you relate to? Why was the story/stories so powerful?

Seatbelt use in the United States is at 82%. However, during the school year, when I leave for lunch, I notice a lot of students are not wearing a seatbelt when they are leaving the parking lot.

What can we do so that we get 100% of the Fremd High school students wearing a seatbelts?

    1. They would be like "What??" Then put the seatbelt on.
    2. They haven't really, I was just taught to do it, so I do.
    3. No, but my dad was and kind of front collision and no one was hurt.
    4. The one you told. I mean one, it happened to your friend, and two, he got his head split open which is brutal.
    5. I think we should keep doing these videos and advertising it everywhere.

    1. My friends would be stunned by the comment, however I cannot speak for there co-operation
    2. I generally make a habit of wearing a seatbelt, it's just good sense
    3. Thankfully I have never experienced a collision
    4. The guy who got killed by a box of tissues, it really shows how much power is in that car
    5. I feel the greatest teacher is experience and unfortunately in some cases the only one

    1. Both my friends and family members would be completely shocked but I can confirm that the would later use their safety belts.

2.Being a passenger, I would always wear my belt in the front seat but I would always forget to wear it if i were in the back seat.

    3. Yes I have been in a 'broad side' collision before but fortunately no one was injured.

    4. The seat belt story I could relate to was the one that occurred 1 block away from the friends house that they were going to pick up. Because it shows the importance of a seat belt at all times despite the distance intended to travel.

    5. We can start by sharing with them the stories in the video.

    3. no.
    4. the fact that death in collision happens when people are going to the grocery stare without wearing seat belts since it is near by.
    5. make an event that could encourage students to wear seat belt.

  5. 1) they would have a good laugh for one, but would oblidge and put on the belt. they wear it anyway so i would never need to tell them.
    2) i have always worn one, but now i know how much that belt does for me in the case of an accident.
    3) um once a car tapped the back end of our car. it was practicaly nothing though.
    4) i think he said one about a car being flipped, my mom was driving and didn't quite do a turn right and her car (a sturdy van-like one) went barrel rolling all the way down the hill. now my mother had her seat belt on and she was fine (not a single scratch) but i could only imagine what the outcome could have been if she didnt have her seat belt on.
    5) have an assembly to show a movie similar to the one we watched, but more graffic. scaring them to wear one doesnt seem right, but with some teens i think its the only way to knock it into their heads. also putting a cop out there specificaly watching out for seat belts would work wonders. we had a ton of jay walkers at Fremd, but one day they started to have the cops go up to the jay walkers and ticket them. i havent seen a jay walker since.

  6. 1. They would feel nervous and then feel commited to wearing seatbelts.
    2. I'm not really effected because I have never been in a situation when I needed one.
    3. The car was scrapped down the side but no one was injured.
    4. The story about the man who was hit with a box of tissues this shows that you really need to be careful in the car, and with the objects around you.
    5. Advertise it on all of the doors going out of the school. Or enforce it more.

    2. I don't have any particular instances but I have always been told to wear it for safety.

  9. 1.) I think some of my family members and friends would shrug it off, and say "Oh, it's not a big deal, we're only going to be in the car for a little bit." While, I feel like others would understand the seriousness of wearing seatbelts, and they would understand my position as the driver.

2.) To be honest, as a passenger I didn't think wearing seatbealts were that big of a deal, and I didn't wear them often, but after I saw this video and became a student driver, I realized the importance of wearing seatbealts and how easy it is to put it on, and how much of a big effect it can have on others' and your life.

3.) I have never been in a collision.

4.) I couldn't really relate to any stories because no one close to me personally or even myself, has been in a car accident but seeing the such graphic commercial of the teenagers in the car, showed me how largely seatbelts can help in a car accident.

5.) To get more Fremd kids to wear their seatbelts, I think while we already have cyber/bullying assemblies/talks, we could also have an assembly enforcing students and show them videos where they show how seatbelts can be affected in car accidents. Or we could even get security cameras in the parking lot where tickets are given to the ones who are caught not wearing any seatbelts.
